Chitwan Rhinos produced an impressive all-round performance to defeat Biratnagar Kings by 8 runs in a thrilling Nepal Premier League (NPL) 2026 encounter at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. After posting 157/3 in their innings, Chitwan's disciplined bowling attack kept the pressure on Biratnagar throughout the chase, eventually bowling them out for 149 to secure a memorable victory.

Former England international Dawid Malan played a key role in setting up the win, delivering an excellent innings of 70 runs off 50 balls. His knock included five sixes and provided Chitwan with the stability they needed to build a competitive total. Malan showed good control at the crease, balancing his attacking shots with sensible batting to keep the scoreboard moving.

Chitwan captain Ravi Bopara also made a valuable contribution, scoring 32 runs off 26 deliveries, while Dan Mousley added 29 off 22 balls. Their efforts helped the Rhinos finish on 157/3, giving their bowlers a challenging total to defend against a dangerous Biratnagar batting lineup featuring Andre Russell and Angelo Mathews.

Biratnagar Kings began their chase with positive intent, but Chitwan's bowlers continued to take important wickets and prevent the opposition from building a match-winning partnership. The turning point came when Kamal Singh Airee delivered a brilliant spell under pressure, finishing with figures of 4 wickets for 26 runs in his four overs.

Airee made a significant impact by dismissing Basir Ahamad for 13 and Angelo Mathews for 14 before removing Rupesh Singh without allowing him to score. His most important breakthrough came when he dismissed the dangerous Andre Russell, whose explosive batting had brought Biratnagar back into contention. Russell's departure shifted the momentum back towards Chitwan and left the Kings struggling to complete the chase.

Rijan Dhakal also played an important role with the ball, taking two wickets for 25 runs and helping Chitwan maintain control during the closing stages. With wickets falling at regular intervals, Biratnagar found it increasingly difficult to keep up with the required run rate. The pressure was particularly evident in the lower order, where the Kings struggled to find the boundaries they needed.

The match went down to the final over, with Biratnagar requiring 14 runs to pull off the chase. Tom Taylor held his nerve at a crucial moment, dismissing Shubham Ranjane for 10 by hitting the stumps on the third ball of the over. The wicket ended Biratnagar's remaining hopes, as the Kings were eventually bowled out for 149, falling eight runs short of the target.

For Chitwan Rhinos, the victory was a result of contributions from both their batting and bowling units. Malan's half-century, useful partnerships from Bopara and Mousley, and Airee's four-wicket haul provided the foundation for the win. The bowlers backed up their performances with timely breakthroughs in the final overs, ensuring that Russell's late counterattack did not change the result.

Biratnagar Kings will be disappointed after coming close to completing the chase, particularly after Russell's aggressive innings raised hopes of a late turnaround. However, Chitwan's ability to take wickets at key moments and execute their plans under pressure ultimately made the difference in this closely contested NPL encounter.
